AFS is brighter than halogen or regular filament bulbs, the Bi-Xenon light is created by an arc of electricity inside the bulb that's filled with xenon gas. It's so effective that both the low and the high beams() can use the same bulb. The available Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) actually turns the headlights up to 15 degrees around corners, effectively seeing into the future. And to help make sure people see you,the available LED Daytime Running Lights shine regardless if the sun is out or not.
At night, a Lexus with i-AFS lets you see around corners. It estimates where you will be in three seconds' time, using sensors that monitor your speed and the angle of your front wheels, and shines the car's headlights in that direction. The left and right headlamps swivel by different amounts depending on the way you are turning – one swivels by 5°, and the other by 15°.
So when you approach a corner, your lights follow the road ahead rather than simply illuminating the edge of the road. It helps take the strain out of night driving, especially on unfamiliar winding roads.
Adaptive front lighting systems (AFS) redirect low-beam headlamp units individually in a horizontal direction in accordance with the steering angle and vehicle speed. As a result, these systems can improve visibility during the night in hilly roads, ensuring safer driving.
We are collecting data about the speed of a vehicle, steering wheel rotation, inclination of a vehicle with respect to horizontal position and humidity using sensors and accordingly turning the headlight in horizontal direction and controlling switching on or off of auxiliary lights automatically. Currently, we are working on the steering wheel measurement module and the inclination module. We are using quadrature incremental encoder to measure the rotation of the steering wheel and threshold angle inclination sensor to measure the inclination. These sensors are interfaced with AT89c5131 microcontroller. It controls the motors to turn the headlight and the auxiliary lights on the basis of the data from the sensors.
Additional AFS lamps illuminate in the direction the vehicle is turning
A controller operates motors that turn the AFS lamps in the direction the vehicleis headed when traveling around a curve or turning a corner. The lamps are mainly controlled according to vehicle signals for the steering wheel angle, vehicle velocity and shift lever position. With the direction of the low beam remaining unchanged, the AFS lamps can be swiveled up to 30°to expand the illuminated area.
